Educators and history lovers from across Cyprus joined POST RI in tracing multiculturalism in the capital city, Nicosia

Nicosia, January 17, 2011: POST Research Institute, together with Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Teachers’ Platform “United Cyprus” (Greek Cypriot Section) organized a historical tour for teachers, educators, students and history lovers in the captivating city of Nicosia on Saturday 15th of January 2011.

The day began with an annual cake-cutting event organized by the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Teachers’ Platform “United Cyprus”. This event, which is called “Vasilopitta”, is a celebration of the cooperation between the teachers of the two communities.

POST RI has conducted this historical tour under the auspices of its project, Tours for Peace, which is being implemented in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Teachers’ Platform “United Cyprus” (Greek Cypriot Section). The tour, which was the first activity organized under the Tours for Peace project, began at 10.00am on Saturday. After the participants and the organizers introduced themselves to each other, there was the annual cake-cutting event, called “Vasilopitta” of the Teachers’ Platform, which is a celebration of the cooperation between the teachers of the two communities.

Following the celebration, where Head of KTÖS, Güven Varoğlu and General Secretary of KTÖS, Şener Elçil as well as the Executive Board member of KTOEÖS, Ali Yaman were all present, our guided tour titled “Tracing Multiculturalism in Cyprus: A Historical Tour of Nicosia” began. After the North Nicosia part of the tour and the lunch break, the participants continued on to South Nicosia across the border. After a brief exchange of comments and thoughts of the participants on the tour, the event was finalized at 17:30.

POST Research Institute would like to thank all the participants of the “Tours for Peace” project, which is being implemented in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Teachers’ Platform “United Cyprus” and is being funded by the UNDP-ACT/ USAID through the “ENGAGE” project, executed by the NGO Support Centre and The Management Centre.
